Representation of Gender Part 2

In the clip of 'Margaret' which talks of the life of Margaret Thatcher, gender roles of men and woman in politics is represented and explored. Throughout all of the clip, Margaret Thatcher is the only female that is seen. She also doesn't talk very often which is significant. The lack of female company and her lack of speech represents traits of the traditional woman as she looks scared as well as vulnerable and innocent. Also in the scene there is a cutaway shot of her hand with an expensive ring. This is interesting as it is an example of the traditional woman that she is at the start of the scene. The lack of woman in the scene suggest her as being dominated by men and needing them for support when she comes under threat which is a complete contrast to the character at the end of the scene.  There is a shift in gender types for this protagonist as towards the end of the scene, she switches to show lesbian female traits. This is when she is leading men and shouting at them in anger. This is not a stereotypical role for a woman in this period of time. Woman stereotypically would have been the ones that were being led not the other way round. The close ups on her face, the very slow zoom in and the cutaway that are all used effectively in the scene show the the traits of the traditional and the lesbian woman. In addition, when she is walking she is followed by a group of men, the shot starts at her feet which show her wearing heels. This is interesting as it makes her seem taller, and this could infer her dominant nature over the men when she is alone in the room with them.

  1. Hi Cameron, this response is very interesting in terms of how you analyse the scene but it's lacking media terminology that links to the 4 elements we're studying. If the question in the exam is how does camera, editing, sound and MES work together to construct a stereotype? Then at the moment this response does not really address the question properly. So far we have only mentioned camera shots but that's all.
Also another suggestion I would like to make is that when you make notes when watching the clip you start by establishing what gender stereotypes you are going to analyse, the start of your response should make reference to which scene you are analysing, and the only statement you've made is that Margaret is the only woman in the room... but what does the room look like? This would link to MES, what are the men wearing? This would also link to MES and therefore your answer will auromarically deal with this element effectively, as long as you can link it to how these work together to create representations.
I hope this makes sense... we'll have a chat in class if you have any questions.
